A look at what's been going on in the UAE this week.

Feb 5, 2017

####New Boat Taxi Between Abu Dhabi and Yas Island On Feb. 1, Jalboot, a ferry service company, started a water taxi route from Al Raha Beach and Bandar to Yas Marina. The company is currently running a pilot program, where passengers have to fill out surveys so that the company can set optimal ferry timings. Currently, one boat taxi leaves every 30 minutes with 10 passengers. The trip takes 15 minutes and costs 15 AED one way or 25 AED for a round trip. The project is part of a larger attempt at improving Yas Island’s transportation system, which also includes the free Yas Express shuttle service and the ADCB Bikeshare program. ####Lowest Temperature Ever in the UAE Recorded In Ras Al Khaimah, an all-time low temperature of minus 2.2 degrees Celsius was recorded on the morning of Feb. 3. Previously, the record was minus 1 degree Celsius, recorded in January 2008. The temperature was registered on Jebel Jais, the highest mountain in the UAE, and with it came a 10-centimeter layer of snow. In the meanwhile, heavy winds and sandstorms hit Abu Dhabi and Dubai, causing problems in both. In Dubai, the wind toppled a crane, injuring one person and damaging several vehicles and a hotel. RedfestDXB was postponed by a day, the Omega Dubai Desert Classic golf tournament was suspended and The Dubai Tour cycling race was canceled. In both emirates, there were reports of dangerous flying debris from construction sites. ####Plans for New Mall in Masdar City Majid Al Futtaim Group has announced plans to open the new My City Centre Masdar mall in Masdar City by the end of 2018. The mall will cover 18,000 square meters and will include a Carrefour supermarket, restaurants, a healthcare clinic and 60 other shops. In line with the Masdar Initiative vision of advancing renewable energy and sustainability, the mall will consume 40 percent less water and energy than comparable buildings and will be built with photovoltaic panels on the roof to harvest solar power. According to the plan, the My City Centre Masdar mall will be connected to the upcoming Abu Dhabi Metro line.
