Buildings Around Campus

Construction work around (and on) campus is to continue in the foreseeable future.

Feb 24, 2018

The buildings surrounding the NYU Abu Dhabi campus have been under non-stop construction since the beginning of the 2017-18 academic year.
In August 2017, the two significant Bloom constructions adjacent to the campus were only one or two-story placeholders. As of February, they stand as clear outlines of multi-story projects designed to create a neighborhood around NYU Abu Dhabi.
The sites have also been a source of noise and debris. Workers can often be seen and heard chipping away at the project at all hours of the day and night, especially for the Park View construction directly across the street from the Welcome Center.
Earlier this month, a piece of debris fell from the Park View construction site, striking a car that was passing underneath.
A statement was posted on the NYUAD intranet warning students to be alert when they were near the sites, especially when driving in the right lane of the street alongside the Park View project.
There have also been reports of excessive dust clouds forming from debris being dropped from the constructions. While NYUAD has no authority over the Park View project or any other construction site around campus, the university reached out to the Tourism Development and Investment Company, the agency overseeing the project, to address these problems.
“[TDIC has] been responsive by erecting barriers to prevent debris from falling onto the roadway and they are following up on the dust created by materials dropped from heights,” said Meenakshi Gupta, Assistant Manager of Administration for the Office of Environmental Health and Safety in an email to The Gazelle.
Looking to the future, the Park View project appears to be the furthest along of the constructions surrounding campus. While already past its initial expected completion date of December 2017, the Park View campus will include residential apartments, restaurants and retail stores. The current expected completion date is September 2018, with reportedly 80 percent of the apartments already being sold and the remaining 20 percent reserved for leasing.
The starting price for a studio apartment at Park View is 770,000 AED, while one, two and three bedroom apartments are also available for increasingly higher prices. The facilities are also designed to include an infinity pool that will rest 30 meters above the ground.
In addition to work on Park View, construction is slated around campus for events including the Abu Dhabi Ideas Festival and the Special Olympics this March.
It is unclear exactly what is under construction for the Abu Dhabi Ideas Festival and the Special Olympics, but it is certain that the sounds and visibility of rising building frames will continue around campus in the foreseeable future.
