On April 8, the Student Government held its bi-weekly General Assembly. The most important points from its agenda are summarized below.
Mid-Semester Budget Review
The GA meeting opened with a mid-semester review of spending presented by Treasurer Ali Shazal Class of 2021. According to his report, out of the requested AED 251,719 for Spring 2018, the Student Government was granted AED 119,070. The funds available for Student Interest Groups are AED 91,750, with only AED 37,554 having been spent so far.
Consequently, the Funding Board encouraged SIGs to request additional funds, if needed.
Global Student Committee
Global Vice President Nick Chaubey, Class of 2018, presented the advancements in creating the Global Student Committee, which aims to bring together the Student Governments of NYU Abu Dhabi, New York and Shanghai. Senators and site ambassadors will serve on this committee to focus discussion on issues that concern the three campuses, such as the sexual assault policies. Voting on the committee’s constitution is scheduled to take place during the next GA.
Elections Committee Commissioner
In a vote for the new Elections Committee Commissioner, Hannah Melville-Rea, Class of 2019, was appointed for this position with 8 votes in favor and 1 abstention.
Upcoming Student Government Elections
Student Government has a number of full year and semester positions available for the upcoming academic year. With the call for candidates just closed, students with have the chance to ask their questions to those running for open positions during the Candidate Forum scheduled for Tuesday, April 17 at 7:00 p.m. The voting will take place from April 20 to 21.
Positions available for the full academic year include President, Vice President, Treasurer, Chief of Staff, Programming Board Chair, Senior Class Representative, Arts & Humanities Representative, Engineering Representative, Sciences Representative and Social Sciences Representative. Positions for the fall semester only are Sophomore Class Representative, Junior Class Representative and Senator.
