Film Screening: I Dream in Another Language
Are you interested in linguistics? Would you like to learn more about research in the field, constructed language and how linguists save endangered languages? The Tower of Babel Student Interest Group will be hosting a film screening of the award-winning Mexican drama film titled I Dream in Another Language to explore these topics. The film follows a linguist in the depths of a jungle who is hoping to record a conversation between the last two remaining speakers of the Zikril language, but what does he do when the men are not on speaking terms and haven’t been for over 50 years? The screening will be followed by a discussion with the producer of the film and the linguist who created the fictional language utilized in the movie. If you’re curious about linguistics, want to watch a good movie and enjoy some authentic Mexican food, join The Tower of Babel on Friday, Nov. 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the Salon (C2-E243). RSVP will be available shortly on the SIG’s OrgSync site.
Failures Anonymous
Do you need a neutral space to share your failures with others and possibly learn something from those hardships? Join REACH and your fellow peers at the Failures Anonymous event to chat about your experiences. The aim of the event is to create a space for students to share their own failures, to realize that failing is completely normal and to lift some of the pressure off of their shoulders. The event is a follow-up to REACH’s Redefining Success Week, which took place between Nov. 12 to Nov. 15. If you would like to reflect on your past mistakes, learn from them in a constructive way and take that weight off your shoulders, then come to the Living Room (C2-E245) at 8 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 19.
Investing 101 Workshop
Would you like to learn more about investing from an expert in the field? The Office of Student Life has organized an Investing 101 Workshop as part of their Financial Literacy Workshop series. The workshop will be led by Steven Downey, Senior Associate at Holborn Assets. Holborn Assets is one of the leading financial advisory groups in the UAE, specializing in investment, insurance and mortgages, among other financial services. Before working at Holborn Assets, Steven Downey has had significant professional experience in accounting, investment advisory and corporate finance, and is a candidate for the Chartered Financial Analyst program. If you are looking for a workshop that will give you an introduction into investment strategies from a professional in the field, come to A3-002 at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18. RSVP here.
