On Nov. 8, the NYU Abu Dhabi community celebrated Diwali — the Hindu festival of lights, which originally occurred on Oct. 23 — at the campus’ West Plaza. The event was organised by TASHAN, a Student Interest Group.
The celebration started with introductory speeches explaining the meaning of the festival, which signifies the victory of good over evil. These were followed by singing and dance performances. Traditional South Asian food was also served.
Freshman Simrat Roopra praised the event for uniting the university community, even though it was different from how she celebrated the event back home.
“This event for Diwali is different from what you normally do at home, but this whole organization has helped the community come together, it has kind of taught everybody what Diwali was about, and gave everyone a chance to express themselves on the dance floor and have a good time.”
