ADvocacy organized the first staff appreciation event at NYU Abu Dhabi on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. The event was held for dining, transportation, facilities, bookstore and security staff
As the staff arrived at the Central Plaza, where cushions and food tables had been laid out and students performed, volunteers joined staff members offering them raffle tickets, food and appreciation bracelets, while inviting them over to seat.
Students and staff members could be seen sitting down chatting and sharing impressions about what NYUAD meant to them; they spoke on how their experiences coincided, contradicted and crossed.
“This is like a proper base,” one staff member expressed. “Normally I just see students passing by. This is the first time I get to interact with a student like this.”
Intended as a way for students to extend their gratitude to all the staff members on campus, the event turnout was beyond ADvocacy’s expectations.
“ADvocacy gravely underestimated the number of staff members who would attend this event,” ADvocacy leader and senior Kimi Rodriguez explained. “We thought the amount of food we ordered would be enough for leftovers to take to their cafeteria, but everything was finished within the first 45 minutes the first day.”
“This is great, really great,” said senior Andrés Fernández. “Why don’t we have this more often? We should have this every other week — at least.”
Freshman Sjur Hamre — who had decided to volunteer both days of the event, despite not being a member of ADvocacy — highlighted his enjoyment when some of the ADNH employees spontaneously got on to the improvised stage and belted out Céline Dion song. He further expressed why events like this one mattered to him.
“I think we were all touched by the incredible songs, chants and speeches the staff shared with us. They are incredibly gifted and unique people,” Hamre said. “I hope we will continue to meet and interact as one big community in the future.”
