Living in the UAE as an expatriate is very common but many don’t choose to settle here for life. Khawla Barley, a woman brought up and raised in a suburban area of the U.S., is an exception. After visiting the UAE during the 1970s, Khawla converted into Islam, married an Emirati man and lives in Abu Dhabi as a mother of three.
She now runs a foundation, Goals UAE, for special needs children after her youngest son was diagnosed with a form of autism. This short film is a story of Khawla’s journey from the U.S. to her life now and offers a glimpse into the challenges she faces trying to find her identity between a local and an expatriate.
