On Feb. 26, NYU Abu Dhabi Residential Education announced the results of the 2016 College Cup, which was held between the three residential colleges. After the Bubble Soccer match, this year’s cup was handed over to A2, which had a 40-point advantage over A5, the runner-up.
The College Cup prizes were awarded under 11 categories. Throughout the week, Residential Education held 15 events that allowed students to earn points for their respective residential college through Scavify, a scavenger hunting app. Events included bubble-ball football and taking group photos in the formation of pyramids or spelling NYUAD. Other challenges entailed proving that one got stuck in the rain, getting a haircut from Studio and attending Professor Adam Ramey’s untraditional office hours at Fanr Restaurant, among others.
Some participants, like A6 residents and seniors Krishan Mistry and Dean Shaff, showed their commitment to the Cup by driving all the way to Burj Khalifa in Dubai in order to get points for their residential college.
A5’s Faculty Fellow-in-Residence Professor Bryan Waterman was named Most Dedicated Staff Member.
Freshman Anita Duskova was named A2's Most Valuable Player. She spoke to The Gazelle about her experience in the College Cup events.
“I met up with my friends and we would do a lot of things together for the Cup,” said Duskova. “For me, it was [more] about competing than anything else and that made me super excited to win.”
“I really appreciated how people were supportive of me doing all these things even if they were not as excited about the Cup,” added Duskova. “This week made me get to know the school so much better.”
Senior Yulia Rovnova and Sophomore Suraiya Yahia were named Most Valuable Players for A6 and A5 respectively.
The A5-A building representative, Ghaniba Ali, shared her sentiments about losing the College Cup to A2.
“I’m upset that we didn’t win even though a lot of hard work went into the events,” said Ali. “But I think it’s because freshmen are more excited than the upperclassmen and their participation level is also higher.”
